Voice chat is coming to EverQuest II

A few days ago, SOE and Vivox announced an agreement to bring voice chat and more to SOE's lineup of games.

Personally, I'm very excited about this. And it's not just because I'm the one working on it for EverQuest II. Some of the features mentioned in the press release will be interesting, such as the voice font feature (which allows you to change your voice real-time) and the ability to call into guild chat with a regular phone.

Woot! I've been "asking" for this for ages...just to the sky, you know. I didn't actually ask anyone for it. More like wishing for it, I guess. :)

Impressive. Can't wait to see it in action.

Maybe this one will work :) .... every other MMO's build in doesn't work with my system.

One of the big problems I've repeatedly had with getting Vent clients hooked up is just getting the microphone plugged and configured correctly. Without some direct way to test that, it can be pretty hard to figure out what's gone wrong.

What I've eventually done is to download an audio recorder (Audacity) with "VU meters" so that I can tell if I have it hooked up locally.

It would be really nice if there were some simple "audio meter" available that tells you that at least the software on your local client is getting the voice signal. This would simplify getting hooked up enormously.

Players will save buttloads of money from this, assuming it isn't priced extra. Will the voice servers be separate from the game servers?

Illuminator: The voice servers are hosted by Vivox, so they will be separate from the game servers. It will be free to everyone to use the service, but additional features in the future may have an associated cost.

Toldain: We're currently planning on having a VU meter in the configuration pane. One of the most common mistakes in configuring voice chat is not having your microphone selected as the input device and I'm going to try to see what we can do to mitigate this.

I truly believe that we have reached the point where technology has become one with our lives, and I am fairly confident when I say that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as the price of memory decreases, the possibility of downloading our memories onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I daydream about almost every day.

This voice chat made it easier for everybody to communicate with one another. It's indeed a genius idea to add this to the site.
